University and College Admission Services - UCAS

UCAS or University and College Admission Services is an admission service for undergraduate education in the UK.

With over 380 UK universities and colleges on it, the UCAS application portal helps 1.5 million students every year enter the higher education, employment and apprenticeship stream in the United Kingdom.

Starting Your UCAS Application

After you have figured out the answer to your ‘What is UCAS’ question, the next step is to start gathering information about everything you’ll need to know to get started on your application.

1) Research Universities and Courses

The first step to starting your UCAS application is to figure out what courses you are interested in studying. Since there are a large number of universities offering courses in every domain, it is important that you narrow down your research. You can do so by considering the following aspects:

  • University location
  • Course contents
  • Entry requirements.

You can do this research on your own or get professional help by obtaining free consultation services from expert student counsellors.

2) Register on the UCAS Portal

Once you’re sure of the courses and universities you’d like to apply to, the next step is getting yourself registered on the UCAS portal. To register, you’ll need to confirm the year in which you’d like to start your undergraduate degree in the UK.

The registration process in itself will require you to put in basic information about yourself such as your name and date of birth. It is important to fill out the details as they appear on your official documents.

2) Filling the Application Form

After registration, you can start filling out the application form. Filling out this form is an extensive process and does not have to be done in one go. You can save your progress and complete it later on.

The UCAS application form consists of many different steps. This involves many different sections that have to be filled out carefully, including:

  • Your personal details
  • Educational history
  • Employment record (if any)
  • Personal Statement (minimum 1000 characters, maximum 4000)
  • References
  • Choosing universities and courses

Paying the UCAS Application Fee

Once you have completely filled out the application form, carefully review all the information you have entered. Once you’re sure you’ve filled out the form correctly, you’ll need to pay the application fee to proceed further.

You can choose one or more than one UCAS university to apply to and the application fee will differ accordingly. The maximum number of courses you can choose is five. The fee structure is susceptible to change and currently stands at:

  • £22.50 for a single choice
  • £27 for more than one choice

UCAS Deadlines

UCAS deadlines vary according to the selected course and university. They also differ year on year basis.  However, the general deadline structure of UCAS is as follows:

Mid-May

Applications open

Start of September

Application submission starts

Mid-October

Deadline for all courses at the University of Cambridge and Oxford and for most courses in the field of medicine.

January (following year)

Deadline for majority courses

Late Admission Applications

While it is important to keep a tab on UCAS deadlines, late admission applications are accepted too. Generally, students can send applications via UCAS until the end of June.

However, students need to keep in mind that some universities assess applications on a rolling basis. This means that if you apply late, there might not be any places left in your preferred course of study.

With the UK being home to some of the world’s top-most universities and colleges, the UCAS application system makes obtaining quality education in the United Kingdom relatively easy. If you are a prospective international student looking to study in the UK, you may still, find the entire process difficult to navigate through. The best course to adopt in this situation would be to avail free of cost consultation service to receive apt guidance regarding the procedure
